Welcome to the Department of Technology Services

Information Technology Managers Academy

The Department of Technology Services (DTS) Information Technology Managers Academy (ITMA) is an intensive, year-long program for state IT managers that focuses on developing the skills and knowledge that effective IT executives need to succeed in the 21st Century.

The goal of each session is to develop today's state IT managers to be future state IT executives. We do this by offering a unique opportunity to gain the skills necessary to more effectively manage information technology operations and information systems development.

The ITMA Class Experience

Attendees meet new and interesting, high-quality people who have passed rigorous entrance requirements and were recommended by their departments in order to be an academy student. You will become a better communicator; have the opportunity to network and learn to work with IT people from other state agencies; develop new skills; refresh old skills; develop a more global IT perspective; be an agent of change; become a leader and prepare yourself for the next level of your career.

Each class develops a class project, unique to that academy. Previous academy class projects have yielded innovative and useful products, such as the creation of the California Association of IT Managers (CAITM), developed by the ITMA IX class.

Class Management

Each academy class has several class sponsors and class managers. Generally, the class sponsors and class managers are prior graduates of the ITMA. The class sponsors are responsible for ensuring sufficient resources are available to successfully conduct the academy curriculum. In addition to their regular full-time jobs, the class managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the class currently in session. Additionally, there are two DTS Training & Event Center staff who support each ITMA class.

Background

The Information Technology Managers Academy I (formerly called the Data Processing Managers Academy - DPMA) began in January 1990 and was quickly followed by the IT Managers Academy II kickoff in July 1990. The successes of these early managers' academies led to the continuation of this valuable program.

How to Apply

Each class is limited to 25 people and costs approximately $3,000 per person. For more information on applying for the next ITMA, go to Registration.
