COURSE LENGTH: 3 days WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Anyone with an interest in or need to learn effective project management techniques. The basic concepts of APPLIED PROJECT MANAGEMENT apply to software development, physical construction, finance and administration, research and development, policy analysis and organizational planning projects. While the end product may be very different, the elements of successful project management are very similar. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the fundamental skills and techniques to plan and manage a variety of projects successfully. This is a course that focuses on real projects, real problems, and real successes. o What are the keys to a successful project? o Why are projects so difficult to plan and manage? o Where do projects fail and why? o What can be done to prevent this? o Why is it that we find our projects are out of control too late to intervene effectively? o What do we need to do and know to design a successful project? o How do we keep the team and management focused on how the project is progressing? The course focuses on project definition, design, communication, and management of both large and small projects. APPLIED PROJECT MANAGE- MENT brings the relationships of the various functions within an organization together to focus on the timely delivery of quality prod- ucts to provide maximum value to the organization's clients regardless of the type of project being undertaken. COURSE OBJECTIVE: As part of APPLIED PROJECT MANAGEMENT, participants are provided with skills and techniques necessary to: o define achievable project objectives; o identify prerequisites to project planning; o understand and define critical project roles and responsibilities; o define the project planning deliverables; o identify the skills necessary for project team members; o understand how to decompose a project into manageable tasks; o understand estimating techniques and their relationship to project metrics; o identify project risks and develop contingency plans to mitigate risk; o manage the project once work begins; o effectively monitor and communicate project status; o keep projects in control; o identify warning signs of a project in trouble and take appropriate corrective action; o develop appropriate adaptive action to remedy problems that are identified; and o effectively utilize Project Reviews for Continuous Quality Improvement. This 3-day course is conducted using a workshop format. After discus- sing major project management techniques, participants apply the course material to a realistic case study. By reviewing and discussing solutions, participants receive immediate feedback regarding their understanding. When questions arise, the instructor and participants work together to understand the questions in light of the concepts presented.
